The Minearverse 5: Closer to the Earth, Further from the Ax

[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

It did kinda harsh the primal vibe the First Slayer had in "Restless" what with having tooled metal around in the same society in which she was sleeping on a bed of bone. But we do know that unlike in the real world, there were sentient beings in Buffy's world capable of creating tools and technology millions of years ago. (Possibly billions if Illyria's speech about walking through the primal ooze is taken at face value.)

Hey, I nearly lost it during S7's BtVS: "Get It Done."

And I'm beyond impressed that you can remember any titles from Season 7

Drive is now on iTunes. Sorry for sending you to my site -- I would grab the direct link to iTunes, but I'm multitasking and misplaced the direct link. But still wanted to be informative.

Oh thank god! My cable got all freeze-frame-y during one of the interrogation scenes on Monday's ep. Presumably because of the windstorms, although maybe it was because God Hates Me.

Calli: My people have a saying. A man who trusts can never be betrayed, only mistaken.Avon: Life expectancy among your people must be extremely short.

I still like my speculation even though it is almost certainly not the Minear direction: the race is a war game to settle disputes. Decisions are made not only on who wins or who loses (though the sponsor of the winner gets major benefits) but what the order is - all the way down to who is last. So the racers are not chosen just for their probability of winning, but for their strengths and weaknesses corresponding to their sponsor in a real war/corporate power grab/mob war. It will be interesting to see how many eps it takes something comes along that disproves it.

What is clear is that there is a cabal, that each team has sponsors, and that someone - either those running the race, or those sponsors or both manipulate and interfere with the racers - that it does not stop with luring or forcing people into the race.

Unless whoever is running it is stupid, there is betting going on, but I'll be disappointed if gambling is all that is behind the race. There should be some bigger motive, hopefully dark grey - basically evil but where some of those participating behind the scenes can kid themselves that the end justifies the means.
