The Minearverse 5: Closer to the Earth, Further from the Ax
[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls, The Inside and Drive), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.
OMG! I liked the show yesterday, but I am truly in love tonight. I can't wait for next week. I'm falling more and more in love with the characters. I think that Wendy and Winston grew on me the most tonight. Nathan Fillion is it for me, though. Watching him feels almost like having Firefly back. That sounds horrible. It's not having
Firefly
back, exactly. It's more that I'm starting to think that I'm going to feel about this show like I feel about Firefly. Which makes me weep.
I really thought the ratings would be better for this one. I really did. I just hope, hope, hope that they're better tonight. I hope that millions of people TiVoed last night while watching TAR, and tonight they've caught up and are watching live. PLEASE.
Allyson's post wasn't there when I posted.
Vague spoilers which make me hope that someone at Fox allows it all to play out: The pacing keeps up. Winston gets sexier. Corinna rocks. Alex gets Dark Wesleyer. Twists snap your neck.
And it's still funny.
Make that PLEASE, P L E E E E A S E ! ! ! !
I think Mr. Closer to the Earth laid some birdseed in the Earth direction, though, and that path will get gobbled up before anyone tears their hair out.
Good. I trust. Okay, admittedly I have trust issues, too, but I trust.
I'm with Liese.
I did enjoy that. Nice twists, although I never really believed that Alex wasn't the getaway driver.
I'm a bit bored by the GI and his wife, though: neither of them are particularly intriguing or compelling to me. Although she's definitely the worse of them: I don't care how much you love your husband, you don't put him at risk of court-martial for going AWOL because you don't like what he does for a living. Which is basically what it comes down to, here. Marriages are partnerships, and you don't get to make his decisions for him. (This goes both ways, of course, but we have no evidence he's done the same to her, so.)
I'm still not sold on Sean Salazar, but I like Winston, despite his unfortunate name. And I appreciate the value he puts on his car. (Being a Supernatural fan, and all. *grin*)
Pity about the scenery, but I hope I can squint past it. ::handwaves::
They still really really need a new credit sequence and better theme.
That look at the end was priceless. I want a screencap. And to spend a night in a motel with Alex Tully.
Unsurprisingly, I am one with Vortex in this sentiment. Hell, if you don't want to share, we can take turns.
Throwing honesty onto the table, I was prepared not to like the show. Even knowing the creative geniuses who are behind it. I didn't want another Lost, and I didn't want The Fast and the Furious. Thank you to whoever sacrificed a family member so we didn't get what I feared.
This is good. Really good. We're getting early character development, and the exposition's hidden behind the mountains of Florida (seriously, that's the only thing that bugged). There is good HSQ potential, there's snark (secret cabal, anyone?), and the pace makes me feel like I'm on the Bonneville Salt Flats trying to set a new land speed record.
Favorites so far: Tully, the Salazar brothers, and Vi and her father. I love Melanie Lynskey, but I'm not quite there with her character. It would be easy to turn Wendy into a caricature, and I'm not convinced she won't...yet. I am quite sure that NO ONE is as they seem. This is a good thing, because the GI's wife currently makes me long for Saint!Cordy.
So, yeah. I'm along for the ride. Roll down the windows.
Drive is also on sale at ummm Direct2Drive (yes I thought it was kinda neat too).

I lay you money that Winston's backstory isn't what he claims it to be, either. I bet the brothers are more alike than Sean thinks they are.
And Sean clearly isn't the candy ass he seemed at first, either. "Get here in 45 minutes or there's going to be a problem" -- and the guy gets in the chopper.
I've skipped forward as I'm still downloadin'. But the Drive drinking game: each time Winston says 'homes', take a shot of tequilla. Then die after the first act, usually.
I really liked Drive, I had issues with my cable box both nights (so it's getting traded in for one that works) I wanted to record Drive and rewatch but, that didn't work out either.
Last night was more compelling for me than the Sunday, I'm not sure why, but I do know that instead of flipping to Drive in between breaks in the Tampa/Devils game I was flipping to the game betwen commercial breaks.
Really like the father and daughter, don't like the army guy's wife, but I think that's intentional -- she's so unlikeable. She'd be good cannon fodder, but then Army guy would be sad. Love the brothers.
Even though I'm from Florida the horribly wrong scenery didn't bother me that badly---Florida shot in CA always looks wrong, and I can deal with mountains in the background as long as no one is in South Florida walking on cliffs.
People people people. I've never been to Florida. Many of you have; some of you live there, but clearly, few of you have heard of the Secret Mountains of Florida.
Obscured by a temporal fold, the Secret Mountains of Florida only become visible to the naked eye (and camera lens) every 100 years. You can get there with a little ritual though, provided you have your magic gourd (the best of which are imported from California and isn't that a coincidence).
High upon the Secret Mountains of Florida dwells a race (take the pun, dammit) of ancient peoples practiced in the Manipulative and Conspiratorial Arts. It is they who pull all the strings, be they of directors, producers and their budgets, actors, fictional characters, or television viewers.
That's right. We are no different. We are but their puppets, and resistence is futile, because it's misspelled and resistance is futile, because -- did you not just read the whole part about puppets and strings? I don't want to be repeat-o girl. I repeat, I do not want to be repeat-o girl, so repeat after me, "It's fiction. They can have mountains in their Florida if they want."
Nathan was awesome last night. Awesome (although I would also watch Viggo in that role). I had no idea the interrogation room was fake. I figured the "cop" was actually a real cop, as well as a part of whatever cabal (they said "cabal"!!!) is running the race, even if he wasn't Officer Poole. I figured "cop" had managed to sneak Tully into some room in the police barracks that nobody was checking, or into some room in Cabal Secret Headquarters. The set reveal was fun. It was also good to see Corinna on her own, and that she wasn't ready to forget about Alex.
And Sean clearly isn't the candy ass he seemed at first, either. "Get here in 45 minutes or there's going to be a problem" -- and the guy gets in the chopper.
Yes, I like that lost Menendez has some stones.
This is me, but I got sucked by the GI-Wife and his wife, once they had the, "I don't want you to die," moment.
Also, I'm not worried about Wendy. She's spot on. I was a little worried, until blonde-girl took the baby's carseat out of the mini-van -- at which point I said, "Oh. You don't come back from that." And then Wendy got that message across just fine.
I don't like the blonde and the shots of the racing itself isn't all that for me. I was sad Winston was so easily fooled by the bounty hunter, too.
