How is elevation measured on planets with no sea level?
Raq, I will happily defer to greater minds than mine, but my guess is LIDAR LIght Detection And Ranging. (It's how we got our contour dataset a couple of years ago.) Before LIDAR elevation was (and continues to be) calculated with stereoscopic photography, but that's so 20th century...
LIDAR is like radar, only using light. A laser is beamed at the surface (sucking a bit of your soul each time, according to our photogrammetrist), and the time it takes to bounce back is recorded. This is done a brazillian (I'm thankful every day for this nubmer) times as the aircraft flies over the surface. The results are converted into points containing x, y, and z coordinates.
I'm wrong about the tiled picture idea. My sainted former boss believes the full view at google.com/mars is an ugly projection of the entire planet.
Oooh, a mars flythrough. Kewl, lori.
