That dictionary is mind boggling, along with the thin one with what looks like Russian ornamentation. I'm tempted to do things to an old unabridged dictionary of my own. The one at the bottom with the cravasse spanning several volumes, though, is very disturbing.

I wonder why these creations don't ping my "ack! you can't do that to books!" meter nearly as much as the autopsies. I spent a happy ten minutes paging through that site going "ooh!", "nifty!" and "I want that!" It wasn't until I got to the five foot shelf made out of the Harvard Classics that I got a little freaked out. My parents' set has been split up and I worry sometimes that one of the volumes will go missing or that maybe they will never all be in the same place again.

I guess that after seeing a dumpster full of hardback books at the paper recyclers, my Book Protector Response has been reset to a whole new level. Making Stuff out of books doesn't bother me. Much.
I still hate the story about interior decorating with leatherbound books that had to be cut in half to fit on teeny not deep enough shelves. There's probably not enough hellfire for that book destroyer.

I agree but then also, if they had made shelves out of the leatherbound books, that seems OK to me. My reverence for books is not immutable.

I have an immediate visceral reaction to anyone damaging a book. When I see decorators doing things like drilling through a couple of leatherbound books to make a lamp, I have to look away. I won't buy from any dealer who strips prints from books, and when I'm in a really bad mood at an antique show, I'll tell other people that they're participating in a heinous crime. The sad part is that most old illustrated books are worth way more cut up.
I am okay with destroying Readers' Digest Condensed Books. As a lamp, they're serving a higher purpose.
