I need some reassurance from the Hive Mind.
At the animal shelter where I volunteer, a cat named Arthur Dent recently arrived. (Very friendly guy. If you’re in the DC area and looking to adopt a cat, I recommend checking him out at FOHA.org.) I’ve already had to explain Hitchhiker’s Guide to 2 other volunteers that didn’t understand why I found the name amusing.
Are they crazy, or am I?
[cap] I get that reference! [/cap]Aw, that's a sweet name. I hope Arthur finds a forever home soon.
Oh, those poor people must have no idea where their towels are. At this point I wouldn't even know where to start with introducing someone to it - the Martin Freeman movie, maybe?
One of my colleague has Arthur Dent as his fake student account in classes so he can check things out. He is constantly getting emails about why there is a new student that they have never seen before. I went with Hello Kitty.
I tell people that it’s a series of books that combine SF and humor. I’m not sure how to say anything more without going on for 20 minutes of quotes, allusions, and an explanation of Vogon poetry.
It's kind of a foundational text of pop culture.

This should be sufficient, I would think. If they haven't already discovered it by now (whenever "now" is in their presumably adult lives), it's probably just not their beautiful cake*.
*Which is another example of the point. I don't remember what that reference is from, but I still get the reference.
I'm not sure I ever knew where "my beautiful cake" came from, (A song, I think?) I just absorbed it from the Internet.
I think it's actually from shrift. Re: fanfic
