May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

Always Anti-fascist!

She kind of reminds me of Laura Lippman, not really style-wise, but because she's so clearly written a woman's take on the suspense novel.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

I confuse Sharp Objects and Dark Places too. I think I've read Dark Places. Whichever one is coming out with Charlize Theron in the lead. Liked it better than Gone Girl.

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."

Charlize Theron is going to be in Dark places, i kept picturing Scarlet Johannson in that role when I read the book for some reason. There is talk of turning Sharp Objects into a TV show.

Because books.

Wait, is Sharp Objects the one with the survivor of the family murders, or the one where the journalist goes home to her crazy mother?

I actually liked both of them, although the going home/crazy mother one was less developed and a little too modern Southern gothic for me. The other one was beautifully complicated, but it all fit so well at the end.

Sharp Objects is the journalist. I keep track of it because you use sharp objects for cutting.

That makes sense! Thank you. That was her first novel then, wasn't it? It felt first-novelish to me.

Yeah, it was her first. I think it has the most predictable ending, but I love the characters.

Thrive to spite them

I recommended Seanan to someone yesterday and her Mira Grant books. To someone who doesn't really like the genre but had read the first Harry Dresden book and liked it so I thought he might like her. I rec'd...well all of them I was like - just read them! try it you will see!

I'm adding Velveteen books to my to read list.

I skipped and skimmed so I'm not sure this has appeared here but our own Fran Wilde's novel Updraft has been included in a list of five novels that include kickass mom's on Tor.com.
