I'm not a Horatio Hornblower fan, either, though.

I started the first Temeraire book and was dreading the tales of an oppressed species, but very quickly the hero realized what was special about dragons and started dropping a lot of the attitudes the rest of the military had about dragons. Then I lost the book in my catastrophe of a house and got distracted by fanfic (again).

I listened to the first audio book from the Temeraire series. It was an abridgement, which I don't usually listen to, but I didn't realize it right away. I suspect they mostly cut out the battle details. I liked it well enough, but I haven't followed through by reading the rest of the books.

Vonnie, grab some Terry Pratchett as read by Stephen Briggs. So fantastic. Even if you've read them before.

I also love the Patrick O'Brien books on audio.

I saw a tweet comparing Uprooted to early McKinley, which I agree with, but it's more dense and complex than something like Beauty.

In the second book they go to China, where they discover that dragons in China are treated much better than in the UK and Europe. Dragons can go wherever they please and can work for money and own property. This has major repercussions over the rest of the series.

Just spent $10 on a kindle book because I'm getting on a plane and am worried I'll run out of books. Not that there aren't about 100 books on the kindle but I want NEW ones! So wrong.
