Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

I really should read SWTWC for the third or fourth time for Halloween.

Jilli, what other Bradbury would you recommend?

Not Jilli, but I'd say Dandelion Wine and all the short stories. I find The Martian Chronicles problematic, but others may feel differently.

He should have lived forever.

Yes. Yes, he should have.

Other Bradbury you should read? The short story "Homecoming", which had a bigger influence on me than even SWTWC. From Dust Returned, which follows "Homecoming". Death Is A Lonely Business and the kinda-sorta sequel Let's Kill Constance. And oh! The Halloween Tree. Everyone needs to read that.

I think I have a pretty, illustrated version of Homecoming somewhere. I also definitely have Let's All Kill Constance, which I bought found out it was a sequel, didn't have the first book, so never read it. Thanks!

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

That reminds me, I saw an unfamiliar collection of Bradbury short stories on sale at the local comic shop for $2. Must buy this week.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

The Halloween Tree. Everyone needs to read that.

Totally concur. This had a huge influence on me when I was kid. I've been meaning to reread for a while.

Is "Homecoming" in a particular collection?

The October Country. But it's also available as a single storybook illustrated by Dave McKean.

Question... has anyone here ever read We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson? Rec it?

I love it! One of my favorites. The narrator character was named one of the 100 most interesting in fiction by...Time Magazine? Anyway, it's a great book.
