If the apocalypse comes, beep me.

Buffy ,'Selfless'

Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

Because books.

Oh good. Because the opening is what's tripping me up. I mean, the language is beautiful, but it's bleak in a major way right now. I just got past where she tries to drown, hoping the ice will break, and it was just ... intense.

God, I need more caffeine.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

As they say, it gets better.

I mean, it's still heartbreaking I guess, but in a different fairy-tale sort of way.

Consider this a PSA - don't pick up Code Name Verity unless you are prepared to finish it.

Indeed! I read it in on sitting as well.

The artist formerly associated with cupcakes.

Teppy, light a candle or something for me. I found a 1st ed. of Anne Rice's Blood Canticle at the thrift store the other day, so I'm finally going to read it. The first chapter with Anne Rice Lestat having the hissy fit over people not liking Memnoch the Devil was hilarious. Probably not the effect she intended, but it made me laugh.

this mess was yours / now your mess is mine

Oh, holy cow. I have lit the candle of May You Enjoy The Spectacle and Not Throw The Book When It Ends.

I know I'll end up rereading The Vampire Lestat for consolation afterward. But it's an entertaining break/companion to the pre-Dracula vampire fiction I'm reading in prep for a panel I'm hosting at the end of the month.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

Anyone have a recommendation for a picture book, with a girl main character, that's not all princessy and stuff, but also not so far to the "Look! Girls can do anything!" side that it gets preachy? I was thinking One Morning in Maine, but I think that's aimed a little older than what I'm looking for. Blueberries for Sal, which I love the book, just struck me as a bit too gender-essentialist today. (Yes, I'm way over-analyzing a baby gift. This kid will have plenty of pink and princess stuff, but her parents would probably look a bit askance at the Free to Be You and Me type things.)

The status is NOT quo.

What about The Paper Bag Princess? I guess someone could think it was preachy, but I just love it.

I really wish that Tell Me a Mitzi were still in print. I loved that book, so much.
