Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.
There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."
Hmm. I read several of Christopher Priest's early books and gave up on him. His books were so progressive and modern that they were boring and incomprehensible. It's not that I think a bad writer can't have good judgment about the works of others; it's just that I can't help thinking about black pots and glass houses.
I've only read The Prestige, and it made a much better movie. But oh! I love angry entitled author rants. So much fun.
I'm surprised Priest was able to see past his ego to read the nominees' books. Perhaps it's grown transparent in tandem with its inflation?
And The Prestige has significant weaknesses. One of the reasons it made a much better movie was that the director dropped that lame-ass modern-day descendents framing device.
I like quite a bit of Stross' writing, but Priest isn't all that wrong...
An Imagined Girls Night With Katniss Everdeen, Hermione Granger, Bella Swan And Buffy Summers. Pretty great.
Bella: So Katniss, who are you going to choose between Peeta and Gale?
Katniss: Well, I hadn’t really thought about it. Leading that whole revolution thing has left me super busy and all.
Bella: But who will it be!! Which one makes you feel complete inside?
Katniss: Um, neither? It’s mostly just trying to decide whether I want to have a good hunting partner or a boyfriend who knows how to work the bread machine.
That was AWESOME!
That was great!
I have finished A Series of Unfortunate Events, as read by Tim Curry, and I really liked it! Except for the end.
Also in that post is a plug for the shenanigans going on in Mark Reads The Princess Bride, which are well worth checking out.
