It might be a touch too old for sophomores, but Mira Grant's Feed is really fantastic.
There's very subtle, between-the-lines, non-bio sibling love that is is-it-or-isn't-it-physical, though. That's the only thing that makes it a maybe-not. It's fab. Girls and guys can get with it.
I also read the Tomorrow books on Consuela's rec and love them.
Are you just looking for recent books? In older books, there's Rosemary Sutcliff's
Eagle of the Ninth,.
which is pretty available because of the movie. It has young male protagonists.

I see
Feed
likes carrots.
It's true, P-C; I love it lots.
Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Story of A Part-Time Indian"
It has cartoons in it.
Does that mean you like my suggestion? Internet slang moves fast sometimes...
it is a great book...gritty and affirming at the same time.
Yeah, that's a like, erika, and I second the like. That's a great book.
Oh, yes, Sherman Alexie is excellent. Hmm, I haven't gotten aroudn to it myself, but what about Oscar Wao? Or Cory Doctorow's Little Brother? (I thought the ending was ridiculous and almost completely undercut his argument, but it is popular among a certain geeky set...)
