Literary Buffistas 3: Don't Parse the Blurb, Dear.
There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."
I finally read "Feed" tonight (I can't think of the pseud, bit it's by Seanan McGuire, and mentions a certain COW in the foreword!! (Shit like that always make me feel warm and fuzzy.))
It was really good. I'd read the first October Daye book, and it was fine, but nothing really outstanding, to my eye -- pleasant. But Feed was really great!!
I liked the conceit, I liked the science, I liked the characterization; it was well-done, and I was very much sucked into the story, and finding out what had happened (although I did twig onto the Bad Guy pretty quickly.)
I immediately pushed it onto my husband, and said "You must read" and usually, our literary tastes only coincide on noir-ish things like Butcher and Simon Green.

Hee. Her statement is true: I
was
one of the first to join the proofing pool. Of course, I never actually did any proofing. But apparently I did also provide valuable insight without knowing she was asking me book-related questions. Still, it's fun to be in the acknowledgments! I'm trying to retroactively earn it by beta-reading the third book.
I liked the science
She scared her contact at the CDC with how plausible her scenario was.
(although I did twig onto the Bad Guy pretty quickly.)
Yeah, I don't think that's meant to be TOO much of a surprise (there are only so many options, after all), but there's definitely more to it than just the Bad Guy.
Glad you liked it!
Publisher's Weekly
just named it one of the SF/Fantasy/Horror books of 2010.

I hate you, a little.
I liked how thoughtful it was about the oh-so-timely take on the mainstream media vs. non-mainstream news sources on the internet.
And Dan was all (when I shoved the book at his head and squee'd "Science! Zombies! Tech-news stuff!" he was all "Hey that's the RSS feed symbol!" and I was all "Ya, it's a GEEK PLAY ON WORDS TITLE. With zombie apocalypse!" and he took the book away from so he could nurse his cold in peace.
I hate you, a little.
You'll hate me more when you finish the second book.

Hee! It took me a while to get used to the new title (it was originally called
Newsflesh
), but I really dig it now. It's very clever, and it makes for an awesome cover.
I finally have my in possession all the books of the Hunger Games trilogy. I am very, very excited about this.
Pity the set is missing Memory...
HA. I mean, that sucks, but you have to appreciate the irony.
You'll hate me more when you finish the second book.
Which is not out till next year. I DO hate you.
(Don't taunt me, I can find out where you live! No, wait-- I'll find out your parent's number and tell them how much you really, RILLY want to go to India and have them find your a bride. Someone biddable and slightly stupid. Who hates books, and thinks TV is the devil.)
Man, I HATE waiting for books to come out. This is why I am always happy to discover a series by an author that is ALL PUBLISHED. It's like bacon-wrapped lit crack.
There was this author that a lot of my high school friends liked a lot, and she was working on a trilogy, but they were all sort of losing their minds waiting for book three to come out, and so I swore up and down that I wasn't reading any of them until they were all out. I finally caved, and book two was much less surprising because I happened to know one of the character's names before I read it (long story) and, uh.... book 2 was published in 1998 so I am not holding my breath for that third book anymore.
No one has a longer drop time between books than Jean Auel. (Yes, i still read about Ayla Sue.)
Except maybe Salinger and Harper Lee.
