Wolves of Willoughby Chase, etc.? I'm not sure about the age. I seem to recall there were gothier Joan Aiken books, but I can't dredge up the titles - I know I read everything I could find at the library by her partly for the spooky and otherworldly vibe.

No, I won't go near the Circ du Freak books, because one of the characters has a telepathic bond with a giant tarantula. Which is a shame, because I've been told those books are fun. But giant psychic spiders are a deal-breaker for me.
