I was able to negotiate breaking a lease once, P-C, just by telling the property management company I needed to move away. in that case, they were changing ownership and having the place empty was really in teir best interest. It depends on the owners/managers, and probably on state law, how hard assed they're gonna be about it. The most you would be liable for (I believe) would be rent for time the apt is empty - if they find someone to rent it after you move out even without any help from you, you are completely off the hook. And it's bound to be cheaper for them to find another tenant than to sue you and then try to collect. So you can probably work something out with them.

Timelies! In my email this morning was a note from the fine folks in Wellington, NZ, letting me know they'd like to do a phone interview with me sometime soon. Since then, I've been filling out immigration paperwork that I'd indicated to them was already finished, freaking out a bit, and realizing I'd better read up on some basics of NZ law.
Congratulations on the apartment, sj! It would probably have been better to find a new place when my DH moved in, but shoehorning him into my little apartment was so much cheaper. (And then, well, I didn't actually have to move.)
