I'm not sure that its as bad as with puppys, but pet stores in the US aren't the best place to get, well, pets.
Go breeder or shelter. There are lots of shelters and they charge something but not a fortune. Or go to Petco, they are a pet store but they often have shelter pets available for adoption.

2. I am totally butting in here, but buying someone a pet one week into things can be begging for trouble. Perhaps a trip to visit them and cuddle and see how it is going in a bit? I am only speaking from painful pet custody battle experience here.
3. I looked fabulous tonight. Nothing special, just felt pretty. And cooler weather wear suits me.
