Fan Fiction: Writers, Readers, and Enablers
This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
Speaking of Crack Van, I'm kind of curious what people think of the CSI fics I've recced this month, especially "All Fall Down."
There was a CV reccer a while back who recced a string of excellent Firefly stories. Now, of course, I have no idea who they are. Although that may have been where I first ran into Salieri. [link] "Scavenged" is excellent, and "Utopia" is jawdropping.
Anne, I'm saving your recs for a time when I have time to sit down and read. Or maybe I'll load them on my Palm for Thanksgiving. But I'm salivating at the descriptions, especially the Grissom/Sara stuff.
I'm baffled by wingfic. Even more baffled by mpreg, unless it's evil mpreg that Consuela makes me write.
There's Sports Night fanfic?
SN archive for all types of fic, the lion's share of which is good: [link]
Which reminds me that I need to upload some stuff there...
Where does one go for good Firefly fanfic?

Like Dana, I am hoarding, because I trust you, and also, I am working 12 hour days, so not much free time.
I can sorta kinda see mpreg in situations where one of the characters is an alien (although the whole cross-species thing makes my eyebrows twitch) or there's significant magic in the fandom. But seeing it as a possibility is a long way from actually wanting it to show up in the fic I read. The few times I've run across it it's been part of a whole feminization of one of the male characters, which tends to bother me anyway.
I just wish some authors were better about posting warnings. Sure, I don't want every bit given away in the header, but certain things need to be stated up front.
The problem is determining which things, and how much information, Lexine. Everyone has different hot buttons, and no writer can be expected to warn for everything.
I keep my warnings as general as possible, and I use the rating system. "R for violence and language", and "caveat lector". I don't warn for character death. I haven't yet had a rape in a story, but if I did I would probably just warn for sexual violence without getting specific.
I know the feeling, lexine. In my case it's because there's the occassional day when I'm looking for mpreg, but that's another story. Sadly, I also know where Consuela's coming from-- as a reader, I want lots of labels, and as an author I hate labelling because I never know what's enough and what's too much. It's one of fanfic's everlasting vexations, as far as I can tell.
I'm pretty much anti-warning as a reader and writer (though I did once write a story based on a joke warning, and will occasionally give a heads up along the lines of "kind of grim, even for me"). Give me rating and a timeframe, pairing if applicable.
