It shoots fire?
Fan Fiction: Writers, Readers, and Enablers
This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
Ack. Didn't need to say it twice.
Thanks, askye. That was the incident I was thinking of.
Katie--your welcome. I don't understand why people think it's okay to go up and hand actors slash fic or RPS fic or ask them to hold anti twinscest signs while the fans take their pictures.
That's just WRONG.
Yeah. Well, in this case it's just one vid, and it's in Stargate, so frankly I wouldn't be that worried - I can't think of any incidents with TPTB and copyright for that show. Still, I felt like I'd be falling down in my Duty To The Fannish Community if I didn't point out that some folks think that's a really, really bad idea.
(It's kind of dorky to feel like I have a Duty To The Fannish Community, isn't it? Oh well.)
Frankly I'm sure that most of the actors on genre shows who want to know can, by this point. It's not like the existence of fanfic or slash is a secret, and actors can work google just like the rest of us. It just seems, you know, unwise to wave it in their faces.
The problem with showing vids to people isn't the showing them slash it's that vids use clips from the show and songs.
So it's in their face that this is copyrighted material that's being used. With fanfic you can get around the copyright issues much easier but vidding is different.
Look at the way companies go after sites that have Copyrighted images or sounds and that's what vids are, and they use music, and we all know how hard the RIAA is cracking down on downloading music, using songs in vids is much more illegal than just downloading a song.
Oh, yeah, I know it's a copyright issue. I was just jumping to the "sign my NC-17 zine, please!" kind of thing in my head with the other bit.
What askye said. That's why a lot of vidders are hiding their stuff behind passwords and so forth.
It's more like, Paul Gross knows slash is out there, he's even made comments approving of what ever the fans want to write about. He joked about how sexy the new co star would be (Callum Keith Rennie) and he produced season 3 and 4.
In a chat last month when asked why there wasn't commentary on the Due South dvds he said Alliance Atlantis didn't even contact him.
So, while PG may think slash is fine and may have written subtext into the show, and even been a producer, he has no say over what happens to the series.
I could make a Due South vid and hand it to him and he could think it was cool and all but Alliance Atlantis would be the ones deciding to sue me.
I am not in any way shape or form advocating waving anything even vaguely copyright-infringy in anyone's faces, be they actors or accountants, honest.
