But I felt like in this case she was going for HSQ, but my reaction was, "But...but...that's not fair!"

Same here. And it made me start thinking about the logic of the story as a whole -- if Spike can't leave the island, why does he have a passport, and how did he get it? which is never a good thing.

Interestingly, I don't think my reaction would have been quite as strong if Spike had just died upon leaving the island. Killing him would have felt "fair" to me -- sad, but fair. The actual ending just made me angry.

But in general, I really like the way Herself writes, and loved the "Bittersweets" series. She does the best Spike voice of anyone, pretty much.

I have to ask. Can anyone think of any reason why someone would write the phrase "tumbling down the rabbit hole of love" when writing smut? And write it earnestly, thinking it was sexy?

I can, actually, imagine someone using it seriously, because of, I guess, the idea of love and the other side of the rabbit hole both being magical, wonderful/scary places/states. I can't imagine why anyone would think it was a good choice, but I can believe someone would.

Ah. I hadn't exactly thought of it that way. I think my mind was too busy violently rejecting the image...

And, on edit, I hasten to add that the phrase was wildly inappropriate for the character in question, but I'm now tempted to appropriate the phrase and give it a place of honor in a story, because I'm evil like that.

Oh, I like that idea a lot. It's not evil, you're just... catching it and returning it to its rightful place, far from the garbage-fic of civilization. Or something like that.

Does anyone know what happened with the Zombie fic challenge? I read shrift's ZombieJayne piece, which led me to the challenge home page, but nothing else has ever been put up there.
