I have gotten about halfway through LoP -- fine story, but I can't shake the feeling that I don't recognize her characters from the boys in the books.

I've read a Spike as a cat story, and neither of those are it, this story was written before Wrecked and kitten poker happened.
I have no clue where I read it but I do know that Spike was a kitten.
