I do wonder if we got a little more than we bargained for, or were prepared for, with the advent of the Phoenix Board.
Fan Fiction: Writers, Readers, and Enablers
This thread is for fanfic recs, links, and discussion, but not for actual posting of fanfic.
This would be why we had the freakout when the policy discussions first started on WX. Or maybe it was just me freaking out.
Actually, I think the posts from one of the threads showing up in Variety did that. I think it was Variety.
Heee! I'm sorry. I just... yeah. That's funny. Yeah, seriously not private at all, is it?

Nope! It is, however, a big reason why we're all a little tetchy.
Normally, the whole structure keeps things from getting too... too, but lately, not so much.
Seems to be 2002 getting her last kicks in. Bitch.
There's nothing to stop Buffistas from doing that, but this little episode should tell you there is nothing currently private about your community. You live in a glass house and anyone can come by and see what you're doing on the toilet and the only thing they need to come inside is a skeleton key.
Which is why we've got the illusion. I dunno, speak for your own private-Buffista self, but I'm OK with any lurkers reading anything I say, as long as they don't connect me to my real name and tell my editor; and I'm OK with any new Buffista joining in the fray as long as they're politecanspellhavesomthingtoaddcakes. Shitty, stupid people may and have show up; and a stompy foot'll get them if they're over the top, and if they're not, maybe strong hints (backchannel or no) or outright explanation of the Buffista ways will make them either get it or leave. Is my feeling. Personally. Am I incredibly naïve about the way of the internet world? Because I just keep thinking of when I was a stupid, baby internet-newbie who spelled intentionally badly and said stupid things. I grew up. Not with the Buffistas, but my immersion at TT among people who *were* clever and talked well was a great former of my internet-psyche.
Shed Your Skin - man, I love that song. So Clexian. And now I'm listening to the Indigo Girls CD you sent me, Mme Lizard. You're an angel.
I'm going to make you another package. Soon.

embitca, I hope you caught that your Profile here allows you to block your email address from general distribution, and that you can allow or disallow it if you change your mind.
I actually don't mind that my posts were excerpted, I'm just glad that I was alerted to it here. But I first came to the Internet during the days there was just one comics discussion group (rec.arts.comics) and my fanfic writing started in an X-Men APA which may be just barely pre-AOL, so I'm a dinosaur anyway and pretty much operate on the assumption that "it's all connected."
I'm more upset that I upset RL.

I know. I do know, logically. I'm just really fucking stupid.

Also? I swear too much. Sorry, sorry.

I still love you! Do you still like me?
Wanna talk about it more? I think I articulated what I found problematic with it....

Oh, I don't mind real people knowing my email address. It's just the spambots that irritate me and having to sign up with a verifiable email address often guarantees spam. No worries.
And yes, it's all connected. The Internet has made our world a much smaller place in many ways. Forget about six degrees of separation. We rarely need that many nowadays.
