This is not funny. This... this is a morality tale about the evils of sake.

Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I think bringing ALL the characters back from the first one and trying to tell one long story was a mistake -- they'd have been much better off going with an Indiana Jones / James Bond model and made each movie a standalone Jack Sparrow Adventure, with some background continuity and recurring character cameos thrown in for flavor. Because as pretty as Orlando Bloom is, did we really need 6 more hours of Angsty Will Turner And His Enourmous Angsty Angst?

Yes! Imagine if #2 had just been The Adventures of Jack Sparrow and Scruffy!Norrington, without all this silly Keira Knightley and Orlando business.

move out and draw fire

It almost was anyway, and excising Will Turner and Petulant-Little-Girl-Fit Swann would have gotten rid of most of the worst parts.

I still mean to start a piratey tavern called "Swann and Sparrow" though. For the two or three minutes before I'm sued by the Mouse.

See? I gave everybody here an opportunity to tell me what a bad person I am and nobody did, because I fuckin' rule.

So (shuffling feet, looking about in furtive shame), if one were the kind of tasteless loser person who actually preferred the second PotC movie to the first, who liked the too-many-storylines and the Keira and Orly bits and just generally grooved on all of it -- say that someone here (not that there is any such person) were that kind of person, would it be reasonably safe to assume that such a person, loser though they be, would find this last installment pleasing?

squee?

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

I saw PoTC: DMC on cable this weekend, and I thought it held up nicely.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight…

JZ, you wanna go see POTC3 with me? We can squee in the losers corner together.

Also, why is the rum always gone?

What JZ asked.

(Except that I don't think DMC is a better movie that the first one; I think it's just as good. But then, I freely admit that any claims I have to good taste in movies are easily overpowered by my hindbrain going "Yay Pirates! Oooh, supernatural magic-y plot points! Zombies! Pirates!".)

JZ, I'll happily go with you to see it. I mean.... a hypothetical person would go with another hypothetical person. Hypothetically.

JZ, I honestly have no idea. I really truthfully have no idea what people who liked the second one liked about it. Which isn't meant to sound judgmental, just that when DMC came out and everyone was squeeing over it, the conversation may as well have been in ancient Sumerian. We just didn't see the same movie.
