Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

You should know I'm a big deal in the Resistance.

p.s. I'm just caught up after being more than a month behind and I had some comments re: those effing Captivity billboards. I'm sure it is NO coincidence that they "appeared" while the film's producers were all at ShoWest. The whole thing is so obviously a ploy to drum up some controversy/publicity for a very bad flick. As much as I despise the MPAA (even worse after seeing This Film Is Not Yet Rated [which I found to be a mediocre documentary at best but still chock full of interesting information]) I will be pleased as punch if they withhold their rating and nobody ends up seeing the damn thing.

pps. Finally saw The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I have to say this is the first time I enjoyed a movie BETTER than I remember enjoying the book. I've always thought of Tumnus as a prancing nancy type and James McAvoy's portrayal brought a humanity (faunity?) to the character that was lacking even when I read the book as a child. Of course it doesn't hurt that he's a major hottie. I bet the furries lurved this flick.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

The Blues Brothers was one of those movies I went into late, but having heard a million obsessive things about it. Thing is, I went into it unannoyed. Came out unimpressed. No click for me.

The Princess Bride definitely tops my most watched list. Judging by how many times I've seen them, Terminator and Grease are up there too--but Grease I could die content without having seen again. Not all of those viewings were exactly my first choice.

I'm not sure how many times I've seen Running Scared, but I can't imagine tiring of seeing it. Love that flick. Adore. So it's on my "want to see again a lot" list.

I'm blanking on other movies, but I'm going to blame that on the pain meds. There are movies that come to mind as liked a lot, but say, The Crow I've only seen once. It's just in the same spot in my head as the excessive repeats. And I'm not eager to see it again, although I probably will.

Oh. Fuck. How am I forgetting the LotR trilogy? Much watched, and I need to shanghai a friend of mine and sit him down in front of the extended versions. So I could roll them all into one slot.

Oh no. He did not know the answer was ipswitch clams....

Yes, I adore Running Scared, too. And seen it way more times than I can count.

Sean beat me to it (although it's Ipswich, as in the town).

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

I've seen Ghostbusters so many times I've lost count.

Compassionately intolerant

I watch Groundhog Day every Feb. 2.

I've seen Sliding Doors perhaps 20 times.

Other regulars include Blade, The Italian Job, Murderball, A Personal Journey Through American Movies with Martin Scorcese and From a Whisper to a Scream: A Living History of Irish Music. I've seen them many, many times each.

It's a real mood thing. Except for GDay, which is a tradition.

And a 'I need something familiar right now' thing.

And then there is the "I need to share this movie with you or your life will never be complete" impulse.

Always Anti-fascist!

I've stopped doing that. People never love The Godfather as much as I and I take it personally. For instance.

Aw yeah. I've had the 'huh' response to Firefly toastering attempts and such...but my zeal is strong, my eyes are bright and my ability to think to myself...'they just don't get it right now. Soon enough, they be whacking their foreheads, deeming this movie/show sheer genius and thanking me to the ends of their days for my generosity of spirit in opening their eyes to it.

Or at least that's the way it goes in my head.

Always Anti-fascist!

I did not get "Firefly" till I saw the whole thing all at once, myself.I was very reminded of Inara in my video last night. Actually, though, all the people who have been "Um, that Homicide thing? Kind of a downer..." is what killed that impulse. Or replaced it with the impulse to say "Well, it is called *Homicide*...it's not like there's no warning..."
