On the plus side, we were sitting right next to Jena Malone, who is just as adorable in person as she is onscreen.
OMG JEALOUS. My Jena Malone love defies explanation, as I think she's a good but not great actress and pretty and cute but not gorgeous or anything. But I love her. I think that it's because the way she walks in
Saved!
is totally a mating call for me, because she bounces on the balls of her feet in EXACTLY the same way I do. She totally wants me.
Though I think if I were to run into her at a movie theater, what conversation there was would mostly be me saying: "Saved! was so good!" I probably wouldn't bring up
Cheaters
(which I may be one of three people in the world to actually own on DVD) but I might.
So while the FiL was here, we caught him up on movies that he needed to see but amazingly had not. The watch list:
- Serenity
- Grosse Pointe Blank
- The Ring
- Pitch Black
- Bubba Ho-Tep
- Session 9
- Six-String Samurai
All were big hits, with
Pitch Black, Session 9,
and
Bubba Ho-Tep
topping his list. He didn't find
The Ring
all that scary, oddly.
I hope at least Session 9 scared the pants off him then. Creepy movie.
Hey, I never got to see Six-String Samurai. How much fun is it?
He didn't find The Ring all that scary, oddly.
My dad didn't either.
Really, I found it atmospheric more than anything. Until the very end, that is. Basically from the moment her kid says (with big, terrified eyes) "Why did you do that???"
The Ring bored me to tears, but I'm pretty much not a horror fan. We just don't click, for the most part.
He definitely found
Session 9
creepy and scary. I don't know why that movie works so well, but it does.
Six-String Samurai...
you just sort of have to go with it. It is fun, but this time watching it, I felt it was really sad also. Jeff Falcon is fun to watch as a martial artist, and there are some great quotes:
"If I were you, I'd run."
"If you were me, you'd be good-looking."
"Only one man can kill this many Russians. Bring his guitar pick to me."
I found
The Ring
nice and shocky.
A couple days later the awfulness of what the heroine did hit me. Ick.
I saw
Matador
last night. I really enjoyed it. It owes a lot to tarantino, but it's fun and quick and Kinnear and Brosnan are terrific together. Lots of snarky, hilarious dialogue.

Maybe 7 out of 10 on the fun scale? Cool music, goofy scenarios, great martial arts.
