I was just reading a political blog comment on the various Dept. of Justice scandals going on right now, and their reference to the Patriot Act reminded me of a line in The Departed that got a big laugh from the audience. During the video stakeout of Costello's microchip sale to the Chinese, Alec Baldwin's cop says, referring to all the now-legal surveillance techniques, "I love the Patriot Act!"
Baldwin can't do a decent Baaahston accent to save his life, but that line was pitch-perfect, as well as hilarious.

As was his banter with Wahlberg. Of course, Marky Mark doesn't have any problem with his Baaaahston.
Alec Baldwin is a much better actor than people give him credit for, IMNSHO. I think it has to do with the fact that he has absolutely no fear of looking like a dork or an ass. I love actors like that.
But his accent did suck.

There was a big appreciation for him on Salon recently. So I think people are cognizant of his skills. His SNL appearances really rescued his career when he was moving away from leading man stuff. And it helps that his turn in
Glengarry Glenn Ross
is absolutely iconic and he steals a movie with one of the greatest casts ever put on film.

I agree. Unfortunately, he shares Julianne Moore's inability to evaluate scripts, so he ends up in a LOT of crap.

I also think it has to do with all his brothers being actors with trainwrecks of personal lives (though William seems to have just flat out disappeared since his 5 minutes of fame).
Baldwin is hysterically funny in 30 Rock. I've never thought of him as a comedy actor before this, but his comic timing on the show is just impeccable. I've enjoyed his performances in movies before, but I love him on the show, which I find wee bit mindblowing, since I'm used to pooh-pooh'ing him as "eh, another Baldwin brother".

And everyone forgets his first movie was BEETLEJUICE.
His performance in Miami Blues is funny too, in a demented and dangerous way.

I know! He was fabulous in that, if I recall. Instead doing all those crappy dramas (GGGR excepted, etc.), he should have done more comedy. Even in The Departed, he mostly stole the scenes with his spot-on comedic performance.
