No, it's shiny! I like to meet new people. They've all got stories...

Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

ita, even if that's true, I could probably find you a more deserving screenplay by throwing a rock. That's not an Oscar-worthy narrative.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

That's not an Oscar-worthy narrative.

Oh, I totally agree. I thought it had a weak as hell narrative.

"What kind of magical sunshine and lollipop world do you live in? Because you need to be medicated."-SFist

At least the Best Picture noms provide interesting menu opportunities for Oscar parties.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

No, but there was Da Ali G Show.

By that logic, if someone wrote an original Sherlock Holmes film (with a plot not based on any existing book), it could only be considered for adapted. Is that how it works?

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Probably, since it's based on a character you did not come up with.

It's five thousand for kissing, ten thousand for snuggling... End of list.

Probably, since it's based on a character you did not come up with.

Presumably this would put The Queen in Adapted.

Aha, but the ACTUAL definition of the category involves the words "Material Previously Published."

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

From CNN:

The film was nominated for adapted screenplay, an odd designation for a largely improvised film, but perhaps the best the academy could come up with. (The film was "adapted" because Baron Cohen had played the character before, on his television show.)

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Wouldn't "Best Documentary" be a better category?

Nana korobi, ya oki. (Fall down seven times, stand up eight.) ~Yuzuru Hanyu/Japanese proverb

Or, perhaps, best Mockumentary. He'd be sure to win.
