I also really disliked it. The animation is really well done, but that's pretty much it. The story is needlessly convoluted, the musical sequences are sloppily put together, and there's this weird dark turn about 2/3rds in that makes NO SENSE in terms of either tone or plot.
(During a scene I was sure was going to be the ending, the little girl sitting next to me turned to her mother and asked nervously "Mommy...is it over?!" and her mom said "No no...there has to be a happy ending...they made this for kids...")
There is kind of a happy ending, eventually, but I thought even that was pretty depressing. The message seems to be that humans and animals can live in environmental harmony if the animals learn how to do amusing tricks. And as cynical as I am, that's just not what I go to an animated film about a dancing penguin to hear at 11 in the morning on a Saturday.
