I've been seeing a lot of commercials over the past few days for Flyboys, which I was considering seeing just because there are so few films set in the WWI era, but I think I'm definitely going to see it after reading the Flick Filosopher's review. There have been some really good movies coming out in the past few years that have a real old-fashioned feel to them, and it sounds like this one might be another.
Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell
A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
I did Ring Day! That was Hella fun. Yeah, that's all I've got.
It was weird to not watch the extended cut.
Oh wow that was a good review. The trailers had turned me off of the movie, but maybe it's a case of bad marketing.

Me, too! I was getting a distinct Pearl Harbor vibe and it took WEEKS to get the bad taste of that film out of my mouth.
The trailers had turned me off of the movie
It's funny... the trailers were what got me all excited to see it.
Though I have been a wee bit concerned about the Pearl Harbor factor, but a couple of comments I've read from advanced screenings (which addressed this very issue) have helped dispel that worry.
I liked the promos for Flyboys.
I theoretically love the idea of a film about ace pilots in the Great War, but from the look of the trailer, with planes flying through exploding zeppelins and all, I'm afraid they're going to feature Manfred von Richthofen as a famous German ace before America even officially entered the war, and have James Franco's non-Australian character be the one who kills him against all odds after a heroic hours-long dogfight. By jumping into his plane in midair and punching him to death.
I'm looking forward to Flyboys, but then again, I did have something of an obsession w/ WWI pilots back when I was a child.

"They won't stop me delivering these UNICEF pennies"
Has anyone here seen Brick? The writer/director is seriously talented but, geez, even the here's-what's-happening exposition was difficult to unravel.

Well, Richthofen was a famous ace before America entered the war. He made his fame when he shot down British ace Lanoe Hawker in November 1916, and he had 52 kills by the end of "Bloody April" (1917), which is about the time the US declared war. Still, I'm with you on the rest of it. The dogfight scenes in the trailer look too cluttered, and I almost got eyeroll strain when I saw the guy running along the top of the Zeppelin.
