You got all kinds of learnin' and you made me look the fool without tryin', and yet here I am with a gun to your head. That's 'cause I got people with me. People who trust each other, who do for each other, and ain't always lookin' for the advantage.

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I can't imagine anyone else playing Gandalf

"I remember when they eventually introduced that drug kingpin who murdered people and smuggled drugs inside snakes and I was like 'Finally. A normal person.'” —RahvinDragand

I'm heartened by the fact that McKellen tends to play older than he actually is. In interviews and such he seems more hale and hearty than he does in the movies.

Plus, sheer fabulosity should see him through into his 90s at least...

Clash of the Titans:

Wal-Mart, which accounts for roughly 40% of all DVD sales nationwide, is not happy about Apple's plans to distribute movies on the iTunes store, and is making its feelings very clear to movie studios. "The notion of kids running around with full-length movies on new, wider-screen iPods that Apple is expected to unveil as well is causing grief in Bentonville, according to Hollywood executives. The $312 billion a year retailer, they say, wants concessions that could include lower DVD wholesale prices... A large wholesale cut for Wal-Mart, of course, would amount to hundreds of millions in lost studio revenues each year at a time when DVD sales are slowing." According to the article, only Disney has agreed to let Apple sell movies. Other studios may come later, but are waiting to see what happens.

In related news, I read a rumor that iTunes will price movies at $14.99 for newer ones and $9.99 for older ones.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

So, if I'm going to go to the movies this weekend, what should I see? Nothing playing looks especially appealling. Is there something I'm missing? Recently, I've seen Little Miss Sunshine and Idlewild.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

This Film is Not Yet Rated and Riding Alone For Thousands of Miles both just opened (in NYC, anyway). Oh, and the Quad still has Viva Pedro! going on through the rest of September.

DH is also telling me from the other room that we have to see The Illusionist and Half-Nelson this weekend, so I guess those are out too.

Ooh, The Illusionist is by my house, so there's an option for if I don't make it out of Queens this weekend. Sweet. And I do want to see Half Nelson, but I have to look it up everytime I see the name to remember what movie it is. Bad call on the naming, I'd say.

Lurching from one disaster to the next.

Don't forget Cruel Intentions 3

Crocodile Dundee 2 and 3

Why on earth is Jackson remaking The Dam Busters ?? The original was a fine enough movie about a hitherto (at the time) unknown aspect of the fight against Nazi Germany but to remake the movie and retell the story 60 years later is a waste of money. Especially since there must still be hundreds of real stories about WWII that have never been told, let alone filmed.

OH! I saw a poster yesterday for Jackass 2.

Okay, the new Wicker Man is so SO bad. Almost bad enough to be worth seeing -- E and I were laughing pretty hard by the end. Neil LaBute's vision of what the world would be like run by women is the funniest thing EVAR -- the man is such a raging misogynist, and in such denial about it...wow. It's impressive.

So, if you do decide to see this movie, I recommend sneaking a flask into the theatre and making up a drinking game. Drink every time Nic Cage does something unintentionally funny, and you'll be set. (But save some for the last act, because otherwise you'll miss some really stellar lines from him, like "Step AWAY FROM THE BIKE!" and "Ow, my legs!".)
