Buffista Movies 5: Development Hell

A place to talk about movies--old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

The really shocking part of this year's nominations is that I've seen four of the five best picture candidates. That never happens! Of course, the five titles are Weepy, Downer, More-Complicated Downer, Dour Lesson, and Depressive Thriller.

Says something about this year's crop in movies, you think?

I suppose it wouldn't do to point out that of the three female acting nods that overlap title with male acting nods, all three of the women are playing foils to male counterparts. I think June Carter Cash is pretty much on a par with Johnny Cash (although Walk the Line is his song, not hers), but the other two -- it's like, to be a main character, a woman's got to seek out a whole genre of movies where men don't go.

Now tagless for your comfort.

The hell? I liked the movie, a lot, but Hurt was by far the least convincing thing in it.

TOTALLY AGREE. He was the worst part of that film for me.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

TOTALLY AGREE. He was the worst part of that film for me.

He did have my favorite line in the movie - "How do you fuck that up!??!?" - but the beard alone was enough to throw me out of the movie.

If I want to become a cloud of bats, does each bat need a separate vaccination?

William Hurt - A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE

That's utter crazytalk.

No big surprises, though. (Which is good for me, because our Oscar Reel went out yesterday, and if we'd guessed wrong, it'd already be too late!)

If I only had a brain...

Keira fucking Knightley?

Haven't seen P&P yet, but I'm guessing that was another iffy nom.

It's stupid and wrong on all levels, but I'm not surprised.

(Unlike the 2 *sound* nominations for Memoirs of a Geisha, which is just plain weird. And the editing nom for Crash, about which I am snarling angrily.)

Punishingly Intricate

Do you think it was poorly edited? In what way? I'm just curious. I haven't seen it yet but's it's in my netflix queue.

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

I'm a bit bummed Ralph Fiennes wasn't nominated for Constant Gardener because I really loved that movie and he was amazing in it, but the only movie I've seen in the Best Actor category is Brokeback Mountain so I can't really complain properly.

Man, I've really fell down on my movie watching this year. I've only seen two of the five Best Picture nominees. Don't know what to think about the strong showing of Crash, which I thought was an effective film, but was too much of ANVILS! CRUSHING MY CHEST!!

I hated the movie from beginning to end, but the editing nom makes me particularly snarly because I suspect what's actually being nominated is the script (which is all about people's lives randomly intersecting each other in unwatchably contrived ways). The editing was standard Hollywood invisible editing -- it could have been done by a robot. There wasn't a single creative choice in the entire fucking movie.
