Speaking of, I saw Dogville this past week, which I found both repugnant and brilliant. Originally, I was more disgusted with the movie than admiring, but I can't shake the damn thing, either.
That was pretty much my reaction. I was cursing Lars under my breath for 2+ hours, and then the last scene came up and just blew me away. (Er, so to speak.)
Still didn't leave me with any desire to see Manderlay, though. Once was enough.
I was watching that Bravo thing on my plane ride home from CA. It was just so much bullshit I could hardly stand it. Bravo actually called it "The 100 Funniest Movies of All Time", and yet the oldest movie was Dr. Strangelove.
3. Shrek
3? Seriously?! I like the movie, but I think it's overrated. I love Ace Ventura, though.
On air they were actually dubbing it the 100 Funniest Movie Moments, which is why I stay tuned in thinking they would be showing a string of funny scenes. But no, it was clear they meant the movie as a whole.
And yes, people have very different opinions about what's funny, but the list is very uneven.
Actually, looking at the whole list makes it worse. That they actually put Monty Python, Spinal Tap, Trading Places, etc. on the list but somehow decided Meet the Fockers was that much better is scary.
Shrek is rated above The Producers.

Oh, the Bravo thing isn't really worth discussing. You've all noted the Shrek thing. What else? Oh, yeah: Meet the Fockers ranks better than Meet the Parents. Groundhog Day is somewhere in the 30s. Spinal Tap is somewhere in the 60s, IIRC, ranked around other Chris Guest movies. And Legally Blond is ranked higher than all. My guess is that box office results played a high factor in the rankings. The scary movie ones were so much better done.

No freakin' kidding. Even my most die-hard Von Trier-lovin' friends found Manderlay appalling.
Hey, Jessica, do you have any interest in writing for the next High Hat? There's a lot of brilliant people here I'd love to get to write for us (especially now that Nutty has thrown down the guantlet with her fantastic article in the current issue), but the buffistae so rarely pitch for us that I figured I'd just ask directly.
No screwball comedy? No Marx Brothers? No silents -- not even Harold Lloyd hanging off the clock in Safety Last?
Does not compute.
I'd also guess that movies produced by Universal are disproportionately represented. (Synergy makes clip rights cheap!)
