Doing his own stuff? It's like we're on different humor planes entirely.

I can pretty much understand this, except for Tenacious D. I love Tenacious D with massive, massive love.

I find it way easier to explain why I don't like people than why I do. Jack Black just does everything with such gusto, with such enjoyment. It's like he's left irony entirely behind, which is a rare thing these days. But then he can be hilariously sarcastic, and his eyeborows speak volumes. Plus, Tenacious D. Massive bonus points for that right there.

Cats to become a rabbit should gather immediately now here

I think that is it-- everything (to me) feels very real and like he is having a great time! Plus, how sweet is School of Rock?

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

School of Rock is entirely sweet. I was surprised by how much I liked it.

I don't understand Nacho Libre, however.

It's five thousand for kissing, ten thousand for snuggling... End of list.

As I accidentally posted in Natter, Nacho Libre is Napoleon Dynamite in Mexico.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

I'd almost put School of Rock in its own category. It's obvious in every scene that Black was connecting big time with the kid actors.

Other things, he's hit or miss. I liked him in King Kong okay, I guess -- Jackson sat on him a bit to remind him he was a period character, so it was like watching Black's grandfather in action.

But Nacho Libre is either going to be really, painfully bad... or else it will go straight through bad and into good again.

Well, I didn't think Napoleon Dynamite was that funny, so...I guess I really don't need to see it.

overwrought and bizarrely soapy and grotesque
Neato. I marked your post so that I'll remember to look for that DVD.

I used to like Jack Black when I thought he was only pretending to be the kind of comedian that, now, I'm pretty sure he actually is. I don't pretend this makes sense.

But I think that the last movie I saw him in was High Fidelity, so my ambivalence is all based on Letterman appearances.

Always Anti-fascist!

Napoleon Dynamite is not funny if you really ever rode the short bus to school. More like "And?" (I don't know why I'm saying that right now except there are moments in pop culture where I'm really aware of being in a...subculture or something. Yes, I knew guys like that.)

I couldn't stand Napoleon Dynamite, either. Let's mock the nerds! No, they're really awesome! But let's mock them, anyway! Blah.

This makes perfect sense to me. Jack Black playing Jeepers Creepers Superstar on Mr. Show: awesome. Jack Black playing Chris Farley and pretending to be Latino: the diametric opposite of awesome.
