Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

Nilly! So good to see you!

It's good to see you because I like you, of course, but I have a Judaism question.

When did men stop having multiple wives? Was it during an exile?

Suela! Karl!

So far, 2006 is better than 2005. Last night, I watched "Serenity", and today friends and family are coming to light the last Hanukkah candle, and I have a working kitchen to supply them with food.

You know how I'm confused with timezones? How strange is it that you're in a different year than mine?

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

Happy New Year!

It was around the 10-12th century, I think. The religious leader of the Ashkenazi Jews at the time, Rabeynu (=our rabbi) Gershom, who published in his life several "halakhot" that are still known by his name (like the rule for privacy - you can't open somebody else's mail), also ordered that no man would marry more than one woman.

From Ashkenaz it spread to most of the Sepharadi countries, as well, in time. But not all - until practically today, when it's illegal in the state of Israel, there are a few people (say, from Yamen) who still see no problem in marryingmore than one woman.

Thanks, Trudy! It's not that hard, really - it's one of those things that you live with, you you end up just knowing, you know?

How are you?

[Edit: msbelle, the Israeli people have no excuse to not-be in the office by now. It's late morning already.]

Interesting. And I recognize Rebbe Gershom's name! Neat.

You guys are so much more educated than ignorant me. I never would have recognized a name of a priest/pope/the like.

Well, I've had a handful of compartive religion classes, and grew up on the outskirts of a Hasidic neighborhood.
