Is frozen rain just teeny tiny hail? I couldn't figure out what to call it when the deli guy asked me. Of course, now it's all fat snowflakes. I'm afraid I hit the wall on cleaning my apartment, and it's not nearly clean yet. Ah well. At least I'm unpacked and have made a first attack on many of the piles.

Is frozen rain just teeny tiny hail?
Pretty much, but different from "freezing rain," which only turns solid after it hits the ground.
Rain that freezes on the way down is the first (or seed) cycle of hail formation. It only becomes hail if it is sucked back up into the storm and acquires more frozen layers.
Sleet is a mix of rain and snow, or rain and very small hail.
I'm taking a break from power-cleaning the house, or at least the visible portions of it. This features a lot of banishing-clutter-to-the-back-porch, and vacuuming the visible surfaces. My old roommate from college is going to stay overnight, which is going to be cool!
Thanks, dcp! I love how buffistas know everything.
ita-- my advice in thermals is 100% silk thermals from thermasilk or lands' end or some other maker. I've worn cuddl duds and other acrylic thermals and nothing stacks up to silk thermals. Not only are they, by far, the warmest layer I've ever worn, they're also the thinnest. They are like methril in how incredibly protective they are, and they don't have any bulk to them. They don't look so bad since they're silk, although I wish the neckline was slightly more decorative.
I probably should wash them gentler, but generally silk thermals wear out on me in one winter or so.
This year I got a pair of wool-blend thermals that are not in the least itchy (and I have Princess Pea levels of sensitivity) so I have great hopes for them....
