I'm supposed to deliver you to the Master now. There's this whole deal where I get to be immortal. Are you cool with that?

Conservative, n. A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal, who wishes to replace them with others. -Bierce

What if it's a two tier system? The smoke evaluates the target, then the mechasaur kills anyone the smoke doesn't like.

If so, then between the first time it met Locke and the second, the smoke changed it's mind. Locke may have become someone the Island does not like over the course of the first season, and now it needs a new high preist.

Wow, it really didn't like "Weiss" then, did it, given that it didn't take very long the evaluate him. Or maybe it realized as the pilot he might be able to figure out that where the plane went down wasn't where they ended up (or stayed, if the island is mobile).

Or the writers could just be pulling stuff out of their asses.

Yeah, I wonder what caused the pilot to be killed instantly, and no one else. Establish fear? Get rid of the flying expert? Perhaps he was involved with the crash in the first place, in cahoots with the island?

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe

Or the writers could just be pulling stuff out of their asses.

As much as I love my theory, I still think that THIS is the real answer.

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

fwiw, we've seen the smoke in close conjunction with mechanosaur events, including Locke nearly getting dragged into a hole by something mechanical.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

If I'm not mistaken, Locke even made a reference to being pulled down a hole by black smoke in the season premiere.
