Re-watching Lost from the beginning, at this point, is turning out to be a fascinating experience. Tiny speculation: I think they've already given us the 'how' of the entire show, with the ending of season five; the final season will be about the 'why'. Sort of. I think. Man, do I hope they close all the plot loopholes and don't leave any loose ends hanging.

Some of those loopholes will be left hanging. They have said as much. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm not going to get all the answers that I want and the answers I do get may not be satisfactory.

I've been a little dismayed with all the articles about "Lost" I've read that focuses on how important the CHARACTERS are when apparently I am one of the few who cares about plot. If they cared that much about characters, they wouldn't have been so inconsistent: they eviscerated Kate, fucked up Jack and made him do really questionable things for no reason, and killed off people who were really interesting.

I'm not expecting that the plot will be resolved solely to make me happy (I didn't stop watching BtVS when Tara was killed off), but they surely realise that their viewers will expect it to make at least some kind of sense. A poorly written/plotted ending to a show that has so much plot potential would be unbelievably frustrating. As with the end of Heroes season one, but so much worse.

I wasn't particularly happy when Tara was killed off, but there were good arguments for the character being killed at that time. Bad Willow was really awesome. So I don't think, for my experience, that is a particularly good analogy.

Yes, you're right - not the best analogy. I meant in terms of audience demanding certain things from the shows they watch, although there may be better examples of that.

Yes, I mean along those lines, in overarching plot terms. The Girl and I debate endlessly over whether all the spookiness in Lost will be demonstrated to be scientific - in 'real world' terms of technology or politics etc - or fantastical. She's not entirely happy with the "timey-wimey" turn of events in recent seasons, as it's too much of the fantasy for her liking (although that may change before the end). At the same time, she acknowledges that it makes sense within the internal paradigm of the show. I'd probably keep watching if they decided it was all a dream that a feverish polar bear was having, if that was well-written and shown to be consistent with what had gone before. Major plot inconsistencies, especially those that mess with the internal cohesion of the world that's been created over the past five seasons, I find much more annoying. I seem to accept poor cohesion better for characters, such as in Kate's case, than in plot development. Your Kate example involves just as much poor writing, though.

True, but I still had a sense of plot potential at the end of season one. That made for a bigger let-down!

Yeah, I think I can get equally angry at inconsistent characters (especially if their actions are the source of major plot movement) - Juliet getting all upset over Sawyer and planning to set off a bomb because of it?

Wow. Not cool show. I wanted the bomb to go off though, but not because Juliet was pissed.

FWIW, I really like "Lost" and watching it from beginning to the end of Season 5 over the summer was interesting. I own the Season 1 DVDs, but I am disappointed in what the series became. It is kind of like the feeling I had toward Alias.

Okay, so I stopped watching some time after the bit blow up of the hatch, a few eps after, and then decided to catch up a month ago.

I'm up to the present and looking forward to Feb 2nd.

I also find it amusing that the Lost premiere is on Groundhog Day.

They could get Bill Murray as a guest star.
