Sorry, Ash (or possibly...you're welcome).
And then he picks the knife. Richard asks him if he's sure about the knife. He is. Richard looks profoundly disappointed, snatches the knife out of Lil' Locke's hand, and packs up the rest of the items.
I'm huhing your huh.
OH, wait. So in the episode, Locke was supposed to pick thingS, not thing, and he picked the compass, the sand, and then the knife -- when Richard was perhaps waiting for a different third, or something? Is that what you mean, P-C. You're probably right. It's been a long time since I watched the episode. I was thinking Locke only picked one thing, and I remember Richard seemed disappointed when he went with the knife.
or possibly...you're welcome
This, since it made me smile.
I had completely forgotten that episode until people started discussing it again. A lot of old Lost is just blurred together in my mind now.

That was why I thought I remembered young!Locke picking the compass. (Or, if you will, picking it UP; perhaps not *choosing* it.) In any case, that's the same compass, right? It HAS to be.
(Also, Cindy, your reference to Toth in one of the recaps made me laugh and laugh and laugh.)

That's what I'm sayin'!
To be as precise as possible: I remembered in a vague way that there was a connection between the compass, Batmanuel, and Locke, regardless of whether young!Locke "picked it up" or "chose it." And it seems as though the flashbacky scene with the "pick it up" vs. "choose it" is likely confirmation of that, although of course we don't know that for 100% certain; it could have just been some random compass that Batmanuel gave to the next kid he found.
Sorry, Steph, if I sounded confrontational. I meant that to come across as "I agree with you. Would you care for some tea?"
So yeah, that compass. Hee.

Excellent, Teppy. I got an e-mail from a reader who was all: "Toth! Shirty! You're a Buffy fan!" Only with way better words. I love that Buffdar is still a useful tool.
Gotta love YouTube - Richard visits young Locke [link]
"Which of these things belongs to you already?"

After first handling the sand and the compass. Thanks, Laura!
