Maybe the Desmond who got onto the helicopter was an AU Desmond who didn't have that conversation with Penny.

Now I'm wondering, did future-prior-to-copter-ride Desmond remember the last conversation past Desmond had with Penny (and considering its import how could he not), and if so, why didn't he know that he was going to start time-jumping once he got into the helicopter?

What was odd was that even after all the time-travel hooey, the outside world still appears to be on the same timeline as the Island. December 24, 2004, no further or before.
(And I thought at first that the Boaties could have faked the calendar, but even Penny was in Christmas Eve.)

Or electromagnetism, which I think is what would apply to Desmond, given what happened when the hatch blew.
So has the unstuckness always been a problem with the island, or is it something that started happening when the hatch blew?
