I am obviously VERY dense, but I didn't realize, until watching the recap show, that the VW Bus Hurley found (with Roger the skeleton) was the one in which Ben killed his father.

they said the smoke monster seems to "take pictures" of you and judge your worthiness, referring to the flashing lights when it came across Juliet.
That's also echoed by Eko's death. The first time it met him, it left him alone. The second time, when he was basically ready to die because of what he had done, it killed him. Makes me wonder what the pilot of the plane did to piss it off.
