1. I was a much more rational 5 year old than many of you.
2. My new favorite holiday is Christmas Eve, because our new tradition (started last year) is to build a fire and sit around watching Wallace and Gromit shorts and eating fancy cheese (Wensleydale, natch, but I am also fond of a good Chesire. And schmancy crakers). Although now that I have a kid who grokks the whole present thing, yet is too young to by cynical, I can see Christmas day being pretty fun, too.

You've never met my mother. My stance was
very
rational.
No! Make from scratch!
I've tried! It turns out very much bad and leads to not having any more friends due to egg nog poisoning.
Maybe it was your mother sending telepathic messages that got your father a ride to a taxi the other day. "He's a safe guy; pick him up!"
No! Make from scratch!
Give us a recipe, fancy-pants.
Don't get me started on the Christmas music hateration.
Everything Chrismas-related should not happen until
after Thanksgiving.
Yes, I am looking at you, Fred Meyer stores that had 4 aisles of Christmas stuff
before Halloween.
Also, egg nog should not be bought in stores.
Egg nog comes in tiny cartons from Whole Foods, and is only used to add to coffee instead of cream.

For eggnog? What are you people? Deprived?
Take milk (4 cups?) and eggs (6), and as much sugar as you like. Also get some nutmeg to grate, and some rum (or whatever deprived people like to drink.
Separate the eggs -- I like to whip half or all the whites to soft peaks and set aside. Beat the rest.
Heat the milk, slowly. As it heats up, add the rest of the eggs, stirring constantly. Also, add sugar. And vanilla.
Once it gets up to drinking temperature, remove from the heat. Add liquor to taste, and stir in the egg whites. Decant, sprinkling nutmeg and cinnamon (I should have mentioned it earlier) on the top of each serving.
If you don't separate the eggs, it's easy peasy. If you do, it's pretty easy, plus fun! Not fancy at all.
I am disappointed that it is the blue laws that are enabling Whole Foods to close on Thanksgiving and Xmas, and not a employer decision, 'cause Tom and I were talking about how cool it was that they were closed, as we were leaving there today. Dang.

Mmmm, bookmarked.
I love egg nog. I should make it more often. Like, ever.
Eggnog smells ooky. Y'all can have mine.
