Mostly religion, but I did it for other reasons. Bobby was not doing well in school. He was border line on the calendar and I decided he needed to be pulled out and put back in the same grade the next year. I gave him one on one schooling for half a year then put him back in school.
I know parents of children with learning issues that home school because it serves the child's needs best. It works better for some super brainiacs that need more challenges and it works for children with special needs if their parents have the skill to do it.
There's also the chance that the school system, while not sucking, can't keep up with little Timmy, who might be special needs in the broad sense which includes genius.

Most of the homeschooled kids I knew were such because their parents were off-the-grid hippies living in the middle of nowhere in the Gila or something. Or rather militant pacifists living in a military town.
There comes a point in autumn when you have to trick yourself into uncoupling the equation of dark with night, or else you never, ever get your errands done.
Yeah, I don't do this so well. Errands end up on weekends.
