I'm not so sure about Witherspoon -- I can't think of many straight roles for her -- but Phoenix has the ability in spades.

I watched the "Behind the Scenes" show on E! about the Cash biopic, and it actually looked pretty good. RW doesn't even look like herself with brown hair, and she is definitely not her usual perky/annoying self.
I actually love Reese too.
