More and more children are getting SSNs at birth, though

All the Israeli children get an ID number (the Israeli equivalent of the USA's SSN) at birth. That's how they're written in their parents' IDs, too.

Nowadays, you have to get the kid an SSN if you want to claim him/her as a dependent on the tax returns.
