I tend to practice anything new with old balls of crappy yarn I don't want to use for anything.
Ah, see, I haven't been doing this long enough to have balls of yarn lying around. Especially since I have the puppy to make sweaters for.

Oh, I inherited yarn from a grandmother, a full suitcase. If you want truly crappy practice yarn you can get acrylic stuff at many 99cent stores. Good for learning new stuff.
