and did you hear that

GOP congressional officials said Speaker Dennis Hastert will recommend that Rep. David Dreier of California step into the duties relinquished by DeLay.

Now last year, Dreier was outed by Mike Rogers, formerly of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. wonder if that will affect the Republicans' choice?

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

That whole line of hooey about our DA Ronnie Earle being politically motivated is easily refuted by his string of indictments and convictions, which include equal numbers of corrupt Dems and Repugs. The man is an equal opportunity stomper of white-collar crime.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Huh.

From Wired:

Glory for the Godless
Life in God's country may not be paradise on Earth, if a study published in the Journal of Religion and Society is to be believed. Religious practices don't necessarily enhance a society's moral and ethical fiber, according to the study, and in fact may prove deleterious. "In general, higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and early adult mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy and abortion in the prosperous democracies," said Gregory Paul, the study's author. Looking at social indicators such as murder rates, abortion, suicide and teenage pregnancy, Paul concluded that the least devout nations were the least dysfunctional. And the worst offender? "The United States is almost always the most dysfunctional of the developing democracies, sometimes spectacularly so," said Paul.

Another link: [link]

RELIGIOUS belief can cause damage to a society, contributing towards high murder rates, abortion, sexual promiscuity and suicide, according to research published today.

According to the study, belief in and worship of God are not only unnecessary for a healthy society but may actually contribute to social problems.

The study counters the view of believers that religion is necessary to provide the moral and ethical foundations of a healthy society.

But I have to say (unless I missed something) that in the second article there's no evidence of causation, just correlation. So there's no basis to say, "may actually contribute to social problems," right?

But the study claims that the devotion of many in the US may actually contribute to its ills.

Does it? Or did the journalist read that into the study?

But anyway. Interesting....

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

Man, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Well, it could, inasmuch as Oscar the Grouch is nicer, and a lot less prone to execrable rhetoric. In the dictionary, when you look up logical fallacy, Tom DeLay's picture is in the margin.

And I am thinking, why is the party so loyal to him? Everybody knew he was playing dirty pool two years ago. One would think that the chibi Karl Roves in the secret back rooms would be writing on the wipe board:

corruption != republican party

and then trying to instantiate examples of same. Is it just a bunch of people not listening to their publicists, or what?
