I seem to remember seeing a lot of them in Chicago, unless I'm thinking of the brown squirrels. I have seen black squirrels here once or twice, but we primarily have the plain old gray ones. They never bothered me until we moved to this house. We moved in, in October, of a big acorn-producing year and the yard was always full of them, which made me recognize their rattishness, and made my skin crawl.

where I used to live in Gaithersburg, MD, there were whole families of black squirrels. A melanistic phase of the gray squirrel.

Oh. It's more fun to think of them as evil, though.

I saw a white squirrel in Minneapolis once. And just a few weeks ago I saw a black squirrel in southern Wisconsin.

In my skimminess, I misread this as "haberdashers of evil."

For the record, they'd be welcome in my backyard. I need better shoes.

We have some albino squirrels living on the same street as the governor's mansion close to my house.

I once saw a deer with what for all the world looked like Appaloosa markings (the blanket with no spots pattern). It wasn't so much a whitetail deer as a whitebutt. And yes, I'm sure it was a deer and not a horse. Country girl, me. I can tell the difference. And there were multiple witnesses.

Haberdashers do clothes. A "gentleman's haberdasher" sells suits, shirts, socks...
