However, oh dear Hecubot, the current issue of BUST mentioned an upcoming event in SF that you probably already know about, but in case you don't, here's the scoop: Tease-O-Rama Burlesque Convention, September 30-October 2. Performances, shopping at the Burlesque Bazaar, and classes such as:
11:00 - 12:00 BECOMING LOLA
TICKETS $6 /$3 Performers with wristband
Australian doctoral candidate and showgirl Lola the Vamp presents a lecture discussing her research in the field of burlesque performance, including aspects of desire in performance, the body as inscriptive surface, and the idea of the fetish object: "becoming doll." Lola argues that the dissolution of subject/object binary allows for greater freedom in how to be a woman today, by calling into question the pop culture feminist concern of the objectification of the woman's body. She ends by asking the question that perhaps the conscious objectification is a sign of our freedom today as women to choose how to be in the world at any particular moment.
