My copy of Symphonic Music of the Rolling Stones arrived in the mail today. I've given it a skim, mostly just select songs. I think the CD originally came out in '97 or something.
Anyway, some of the compositions are okay, and others not so much. Paint it Black is redone with slow, somber, Middle Eastern style strings. It's pretty, but doesn't work as well as I wish it did. Sympathy for the Devil is recast as an operatic number, and comes out super-goofy. Gimme Shelter is, like Paint it Black, slowed in tempo considerably for the orchestration, but it comes out powerful and sad.
Of all the arrangements on the CD I've listened to, however, Jumpin' Jack Flash (the composition I bought the entire CD for, based on a 30 second clip) is BY FAR the best arrangement on the CD. It is the most awesomely ASS KICKING orchestral piece you have ever heard. It's really kind of funny that, of all possible Stones tunes, that one winds up translating into classical music so well.
