Just purchased Sir Paul's Dance Tonight single.
Like pretty much everything Paul's ever written, it's catchy, poppy, likable, and pretty good. John was always the better songwriter, though he was was always the darker one. But the song is good. It's sounds like classic Paul. Makes me miss John and George, but I like it.

And upon a couple of listens, it's bright and upbeat, but there's this undercurrent of sadness that I can't quite tell if it's actually there, or if I'm adding it to the song in my head myself.

Ringo's my favorite. Mostly for A Hard Day's Night (the movie, not the album). Otherwise I like the Beatles as the Beatles better than their individual parts. I think both John and Paul wrote their best songs when they were collaborating/competing with each other.
I have problems with the Beatles. Largely that the oldies stations seem to obsess with them. For some year, I listened to stations that would limit themselves to one or two songs by any other '60s artist (a practice that, for many artists, should be considered almost criminal) but would gladly play any and every album cut from the Beatles.
This is reminding me of an email conversation I had with my friend Donna like five years ago (some of you met her during the LA F2F). She had asked me who my favorite Beatle was. I replied
I'm torn between George & John. I've always liked the underdog (George), but... y'know.... Tomorrow Never Knows....A few months later she sent me the following, which I am quoting verbatim because I don't think she'd mind and it still makes me smile whenever I think of it:
So i was talking to a friend of mine the other day about who our favorite beatles were etc ... (one of my favorite questions) and i told him what you had said -- well, i really love george, but there there's tomorrow never knows. my friend, Jay, continued to tell me a story about his bandmate (of the Punk Monkees) Dave.
Dave heard an interview with paul, and the subject of tomorrow never knows came up. Apparently, Paul said about it "oh, that was ALL Ringo". At the time, Dave had a big white beater of a car. He went out and got some spraypaint and painted across the whole side of the car IT WAS ALL RINGO
I'm really into ringo right now. I mean, he's not a contender for the favorite beatle ... but when i hear a drummer without any ringo in them, it makes me sad. ;)
