Whatever happened to the still beating heart of a virgin? No one has any standards anymore.

There's a lady plays her fav'rite records/On the jukebox ev'ry day/All day long she plays the same old songs/And she believes the things that they say/She sings along with all the saddest songs/And she believes the stories are real/She lets the music dictate the way that she feels.

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Who would be the special guests at a 4AD birthday bash? Hmmm...

Pixies! Throwing Muses! Cocteau Twins! This Mortal Coil alumni! Dead Can Dance!

with a gleam in my eye, and an almost airtight alibi

Oh, it's gots to be the Pixies. Have they played the UK on this tour?

ETA: Actually, it could easily be more than one of the above, given the occasion...!

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Hey, Hec, I should have said this a while ago, but I really like "Beatnik Boy." Thanks.

You're welcome. You might want to do further inspection of Tallulah Gosh/Heavenly/Marine Institute.

My sources say Talulah.

Ooh! Free Amazon.com download of "Pastels Badge"! Awesome! Ah, it's live.

Ficht nicht mit Der Raketemensch!

Knowing my luck I'd go to that 4AD thing and find it was X Mal Deutschland and Vaughan Oliver shouting drunken abuse about "that ripoff bastard Dave McKean".

If you want a primer on that whole Talulah Gosh sound try the Rough Trade Indie Pop 1 compilation, which despite having the wrong early Primals track is essential.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

There was a pretty solid Talulah Gosh CD comp, IIRC.

For Heavenly, the P.U.N.K. Girl EP is just about perfect.

And to bring it all around, Hearts & Crosses, on that same EP, is an amazing Disturbing Pop song about date rape.

Hey, Joe B, did you see that Lethem is officially a MacArthur-certified genius now?

A fellow makes himself conspicuous when he throws soft-boiled eggs at the electric fan.

Okay, so somebody (Jim?) mentioning Jackie Wilson sent me to the iTunes store, where I see Dexy's Midnight Runners did a cover of "Jackie Wilson Said." Want.

I think I'm on record as "Crazy in Love" being a highly addictive song, but does the rap break disqualify it as pop? Come to think of it, I'm not sure if there are songs with "crazy" in the title that I *don't* like.

And "Twist" by I Am Kloot has the lovely and disturbing lyrics "There's blood on your legs ... I love you. ... Twist, snap ... I love you."

Totally the wrong thread, but coincidentally I saw Fortress of Solitude at the Harvard Book Store yesterday on the remainder table for $4.99. Can I assume that this is a must-have (esp. for the price)?
