A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I love turntablist Kid Koala, but this video is the first time I really understand what it is he does: [link]

"Look, son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Very cool link, Jon.

So, I'm browsing through AMG and I notice that Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs is 9 years old. Huh. And Sparklehorse's debut is 11 years old. So is Soul Coughing's Irresistible Bliss.

How can that be? The late nineties was a decade ago.

That happens to me during my radio show sometimes. I'll play a CD and say that it I think it came out "a few years ago", then actually look at it and discover that "a few" = "12".

The feeling you get when your brain finally lets your heart get in its pants.

If my main reaction to the first half hour or so of Mirrormask was a nagging irritation with the lead character, is there any point in watching the rest?

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

I think you meant to put that in Movies.

But I love Mirrormask, and it's a gorgeous movie. I'd give it a chance. Plus, the lead is just a child, and she learns as she goes along, as child heroines usually do.

I really did, and I was about to fix it, but it's too late.

Stoopid cold meds.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

The BBC plans to mark the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ this Easter with an hour-long live procession through the streets of Manchester featuring pop stars from The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays and featuring songs by The Smiths and New Order.

In the programme, called Manchester Passion, a character representing Jesus will sing the legendary Joy Division anthem Love Will Tear Us Apart before dueting his arch-betrayer Judas on the New Order hit Blue Monday, according to senior church sources involved in the production.

Mary Magdelene, the penitent whore of the New Testament, is also getting in on the act: she is being lined up to sing the Buzzcocks hit Ever Fallen in Love (with Someone You Shouldn't have) accompanied by a string band.

Former Happy Monday and Celebrity Big Brother winner Bez will play a disciple.

The climax of the event sees Jesus sing the Smiths classic song Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now as he is being flayed by Roman soldiers. He will then come face-to-face with his Roman prosecutor Pontius Pilate with the two of them singing a duet of the Oasis hit Wonderwall and its chorus:

"I said maybe
You're gonna be the one who saves me?
And after all
You're my wonderwall."

Wait, I thought April Fools was last weekend....

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I need to find the video of that! It happened last Easter -- the story's over a year old.

A really good turntablist is astonishing. Most of the people I've seen/heard "play" the turntables just scratch, which is (IMO) completely different. But there's a fair number of turntablists who play like they're violinists who can make their instrument make any sound they please, from talking to singing to conjuring a full orchestra, jazz band or funkabilly quartet, just for a moment, then move on to the next sound they want their instrument to make.

I'm sure I've said it before, but it's one of the things I like about the band Incubus. DJ Kris Killmore, their turntablist, is awesome. He's what makes them more than just a punk/funk/hard rock fusion band. His contribution to the band's sound is both great and subtle. Sometimes you can't even tell he's playing on a particular song, but he's there -- acting like salt in a sweet dish, enhancing the sound in surprising and subtle ways.
